Contact information and next steps
When you get in touch with us, you are likely to speak to Kerry. She is our team co-ordinator and she looks after the diary and sends out all the information you might need. She's really easy to talk to on the phone but we're equally happy to communicate by email - we understand that everyone communicates differently.
Once you have decided to go ahead, we will send you a list of the proposed dates for all of the appointments that you need to complete the assessment. This will tell you whether the appointment needs to be in-person or online for each different stage of the process.
We send out questionnaires in order to get some background information. This helps us to ensure that the assessments we use are the most appropriate ones. We often like to collect information from other sources, if you are happy for us to do this. For children, this might mean asking their education setting to complete a questionnaire too.
Your first appointment will be an online appointment with one of our clinical psychologists*.
We can find out what has brought you to seek out an assessment. We want to find out as much as we can about early childhood through to current life.
We might ask some questions that feel quite personal and probing, but we only ask questions that we need to to help diagnostically.
At the face-to-face appointment with our Speech and Language Therapists we use standardised assessments that are internationally recognised, such as the ADOS-2 to indicate whether the threshold for an diagnosis has been met. We may also use supplementary assessments to give us further information where appropriate.
For children, sometimes we also need to visit their education setting to observe them both in class and during break time. However, we often find that the written information we receive from the school gives us more than enough information. The teachers usually know the children so well, and observe them throughout the day and across the week, allowing them to give far more insight than we are likely to see in a short visit.
The multidisciplinary team (MDT) meet to discuss their findings and reach a consensus as to whether an diagnosis is appropriate given the information provided across the range of different sources. All clinicians must be in agreement for a diagnosis to be given.
Each clinician then writes their section of the report before it is edited together into one comprehensive document. This is always proofread by the team.
Members of the MDT will meet with you to discuss the outcome of the assessment, explain how this outcome was reached, and describe some of the things that were noted during the assessment process that contributed to the outcome. We keep this appointment relatively short (around 30 minutes) as, whatever the outcome, it can be emotional hearing this information.
The assessment report will be sent out to you through our secure client portal, and you will receive a notification when it is ready.
You will then have time to read through the details of the report.
After receiving the outcome during the feedback appointment, and reading through the report in your own time, it is not unusual to have many questions. This appointment is a Q&A format, which you can use to ask anything you need to about the assessment, report, outcomes or potential implications. We can also discuss further support that is on offer.
We don't believe in handing out a diagnosis (or not) and then leaving you to navigate the system on your own. We provide after-care support in the form of putting you in touch with other people at the same stage of the process, should you wish (depending on client uptake). We also offer ongoing speech and language therapy for adults and children where this is appropriate. We can also arrange further Q&A sessions with the team if other queries arise at a later date. We can signpost you to helpful sources for further information or support too.
Our office is based in Walton-on-Thames, Surrey, KT12 2SD.
We also offer assessment clinics in Guildford and Kingston upon Thames to minimise the travel burden for our clients. Please let us know if you have a location preference or would be able and willing to travel to one of the other locations, depending on appointment availability.
Our assessment rooms are dedicated rooms which are decorated in neutral colours.
As an example, our room in Walton-on-Thames has air conditioning to allow us to control the temperature, and we can add items to the room to help familiarisation.
A popular request is for Squishmallows (pictured).
If there is something that would help the environment to feel comfortable then please discuss it with us, we can make it cold, turn off the lights or add a gentle fragrance to accommodate sensory preferences.
Neurodevelopmental Assessments
We offer gold-standard assessment packages, utilising diagnostic tools (such as the ADOS-2 ADI-r QB-test, Conners and SNAP-IV) in order to diagnose autism in children, young people and adults. Our assessments are aligned to the NICE guidelines, and any diagnosis we give meets the criteria for the NHS, schools and local authorities, so you can be assured that your diagnosis and report will be accepted elsewhere.
Autism Diagnostic Assessment: from £2,250
This is a multi-disciplinary team (MDT) assessment, with our autism assessment specialists from the fields of clinical psychology and speech and language therapy. Using a combination of developmental history and assessment through observation, we work together to determine whether or not our client meets the criteria for an autism diagnosis. Once our team has discussed the assessments and compiled the report, you will be invited to meet with one of our team to be given the results, and where appropriate, an autism diagnosis. And our input doesn’t end with the diagnostic outcome, we offer a follow up appointment to discuss how our conclusion was reached, and another one to give you the chance to ask us questions after you’ve had chance to consider our feedback. You can use this to ask anything you want, from further information on the assessment, next steps, and advice to implement support at home, at work, or at school.
ADHD Diagnostic Assessment: from £2,250
This is a multi-disciplinary team assessment, including our ADHD assessment specialists from the fields of clinical psychology and speech and language therapy. Using a combination of developmental history and assessment through observation, we work together to determine whether or not our client meets the criteria for an ADHD diagnosis. Once our team has discussed the assessments and compiled the report, you will be invited to meet with one of our team to be given the results, and where appropriate, an ADHD diagnosis.
Just as in our autism assessments, our input doesn’t end with the diagnostic outcome, we offer a follow up appointment to discuss how our conclusion was reached, and another one to give you the chance to ask us questions after you’ve had chance to consider our feedback. You can use this to ask anything you want, from further information on the assessment, next steps, and advice to implement support at home, at work, or at school.
Please note, we do not offer a medication prescriber service at present
Combined Autism and ADHD Diagnostic Assessment: £2,750
This combines the above assessments in order to investigate whether our client has one or both neurodevelopmental conditions listed above. Some aspects of the above assessments are used in both types of assessment and can therefore be used in the clinical decision making process for both conditions. Other elements are unique to the assessment for each condition and both are required for us to have sufficient information. You will receive one report that covers all information from the assessment. As above, follow up care is also provided through feedback and question & answer sessions, with the option for therapy or parent coaching for ongoing support after the assessment process is finished.
In order for a private diagnosis to be recognised or accepted by public services, it must be robust and of the same standard of an NHS autism assessment or above.
Our reports meet the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines, following the same process as an NHS assessment, and have a proven track record of being used by Local Authorities, the NHS, as well as internationally.
We don't believe in handing out a diagnosis (or not) and then leaving you to navigate the next steps on your own.
We provide after-care support which can include:
- Coffee mornings: we can facilitate a meetup with other people at the same stage of the diagnostic process (depending on client uptake)
- Therapy: the opportunity for speech and language therapy sessions where appropriate
- Consultations: further Q&A sessions with the team if other queries arise at a later date
- Signposting: information on other helpful sources for further information or support
